International Journal of Translation – IJT (started in 1989), is a peer-reviewed international journal that has been publishing original research papers devoted to TRANSLATION STUDIES. It is published in March and September every year. It is indexed at Translation Studies Abstracts and sent for indexing at ERIC from 2010 onwards

It provides a forum for the discussion of the various theories of translation and interpreting and their practical application; the various processes involved in literary, machine and technical translations; the experience and the points of view of translators while translating & the translated texts from the point of view of cultural and sociolinguistic appropriateness.

From when the computers came into being, Machine translation is viewed as a potential tool for breaking language barrier. In a country like India where intercultural relations gain new expansions, it will be of special importance to explore the benefits and applications of machine translation process. Keeping in mind the importance of Machine Translation in Indian Society, IJT is devoting a special issue to machine translation among Indian languages.

Papers related (directly or indirectly) to machine translation among Indian languages or from English to Indian Languages or vice versa are most relevant. More specifically, the main topics of interest include, though are not limited to, the following:

• Machine translation methodologies (MT)
• Computer-assisted translation (CAT)
• Machine translation tools
• Lexical resources for MT
• Dictionaries and grammars for translation
• Machine translation problems
• Machine translation and morphology
• Applications of translation to CLIR, text summerisation, question answering systems, E-governance etc.
• Connectionist approaches to translation
• Compilation and use of bi- and multilingual corpora for MT
• Discourse phenomena and their treatment in machine translation
• MT for software localization and internationalization
• Computational implications of Indian language character sets for machine translation
• Performance evaluation of MT systems for Indian languages.
• OOV words dealing in MT etc.

The topics suggested by this issue can be discussed in term of concepts, surveys, state of the art, research, standards, implementations, running experiments, applications, and industrial case studies. Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished papers, which are not under review in any other conference or journal.

All contributions are peer reviewed. Publication has no cost for the authors, and the editorial house sends for free one complete copy of the issue to every author. This guarantees the quality of the papers: the publisher's income comes from the readers, not from the authors.

The papers pertaining to the areas mentioned above should be submitted electronically in MS-Word and PDF file formats to the Guest Editor/Editors, at their e-mail addresses given below not later than 30th March 2010.

Please indicate “IJT Special issue on MT among IL” in the Subject line of all email correspondence. We encourage you to submit abstracts of papers in preparation, for us to plan the future special issues and to allocate room for your paper. When submitting an abstract, please indicate when your paper will be ready. The last date of submitting the abstracts is 31st Dec 2009.

SCREENS WE LIVE BY: AN UPDATED INSIGHT INTO
AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION RESEARCH

This volume is an attempt to open up a space for exchanging latest research horizons on Audiovisual Translation, focusing on the results of a wide range of research projects.

During the last two decades Audiovisual Translation has revealed to be a complex and unstable field of research, rich in linguistic, cultural and ideological associations. A wealth of disciplines are enlarging the analytical and research horizons. Among them we can mention pragmatics, cultural studies, sociolinguistics, sociology, neuropsychology, descriptive translation studies, and many more. As a result of this richness of perspectives, the intersection between the audiovisual text and translation has grown exponentially, allowing a variety of lines of research unthought of just a few years ago, when both 'audiovisual' and 'translation' were no more than marginal categories in the field of Translation Studies.

We welcome papers focusing on research projects in the field of Audiovisual Translation, especially those concerned with:

• International research projects
• Innovative uses of data-driven studies and leading-edge technologies for AVT
• Cross-disciplinary perspectives
• Challenging proposals, with a focus on political or ideological issues
• Empirical approaches to the AVT analysis, but also
• A revaluation of the basic theoretical tenets linking 'general audiovisual translation' and 'new modalities involved in AVT'

The papers pertaining to the areas mentioned above should be submitted in MS-Word VIA e-mail to the Guest Editor/Editors at their contact addresses given below not later than 1st Feb 2011.

Papers should not exceed 7500 words and should be preceded by an abstract of 150-200 words. It should also list 5-6 key words.

All papers submitted to IJT should be original, neither having been previously published nor being considered elsewhere at the time of submission.  

The guest editor will select contributions for the special issue and notify authors of acceptance or otherwise at the end of March 2011. The date of publication of issue would be Sep 2011.

Authors of published papers will receive 1 copy of the journal per author, in addition to a PDF file of the final paper.

1990s saw the cultural turn of translation studies by Susan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere, and since then cultural translation is still making progress, centering on such topics as translation and ideology, translation and power, translation and politics, translation and sex, etc. and hence the problems of domestication and foreignization, of choices of texts, of standards for the judgment of translators and translations and so on. And nowadays in the context of cultural diversity, further constructive topics on cultural translation are suggested, though are not limited, as follows,

The stimuli of these perspectives focus on the dimensions of translation studies and also the problems and challenges encountered as also the problems of ambiguity within an interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue.
